More Than Waves: Family, Fun, and Generations at Newcastle Bodyboarding Club

At Newcastle Bodyboarding Club, bodyboarding is only part of the story. What truly sets our club apart is our commitment to fun for families and the incredible mix of generations that make up our community. From groms catching their first waves to parents, grandparents, and lifelong riders sharing the lineup, NBC is a place where everyone belongs.

A Club for All Ages

One of the most special things about our club is seeing generations surf side by side. Kids compete in the same club environment where their parents once pulled on a rashie, and in many cases, grandparents are still involved—whether cheering from the beach, helping run events, or sharing stories of contests from decades past.

Our competitions are designed to be inclusive and supportive. While everyone loves a good heat win, the focus is always on participation, improvement, and enjoyment. It’s not uncommon to see siblings competing against each other, parents paddling out in later divisions, and families celebrating together at the end of the day—saltwater still in their hair.

Everyone Chips In

At NBC, the club doesn’t run without its people. Families play a huge role in making each event successful. While competitors are out in the water, parents and older members are on the beach scoring heats, helping with jerseys, setting up tents, or firing up the BBQ.

The BBQ has become a cornerstone of our club days—where kids refuel after heats, parents catch up, and everyone shares a laugh. These moments are just as important as the surfing itself, helping create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that keeps families coming back week after week.

Coaching the Next Generation

Our groms are the heart of the future, and we take pride in nurturing their love for bodyboarding. Experienced members volunteer their time to coach, encourage, and mentor younger riders, both in and out of the water. It’s about more than technique—it’s about building confidence, ocean awareness, respect, and sportsmanship.

Seeing older club members take groms under their wing is a powerful reminder of what community sport is all about. Those groms grow up knowing they’re supported, valued, and part of something bigger than just a contest result.

Memories Beyond the Home Beach

Some of our best memories are made away from home. Travelling together for out-of-club competitions turns weekends into mini-adventures. Families pack cars, share accommodation, and support each other on unfamiliar beaches up and down the coast.

These trips strengthen friendships and create lifelong memories—early morning surfs, cheering from the shoreline, shared meals, and post-comp debriefs. Win or lose, everyone comes home with stories, laughs, and an even stronger bond with the club.

Fun First, Always

While competition is an important part of bodyboarding, fun is always our priority. We believe that when people are enjoying themselves, confidence grows, skills improve, and community thrives. Our events are designed to be welcoming, low-pressure, and enjoyable for surfers and spectators alike.

Newcastle Bodyboarding Club is more than a sporting club—it’s a family. A place where generations connect, kids grow, friendships form, and the love of the ocean is shared.

If you’re looking for a club that values fun, family, and community as much as the waves themselves, we’d love to see you down the beach.
